More Than Just Fishing

A Day of Confidence, Connection, and Community

By Lionel James | In My Own Words

For as long as I can remember, fishing has been part of my life.

Growing up, whether I was fishing with my dad or spending time on the water by myself, I never really understood how much those moments would shape the man I would become.

Back then, I just wanted to catch fish.

Looking back now, I realize I was learning patience, independence, discipline, and how to appreciate the simple things in life. Fishing gave me an opportunity to explore, to challenge myself, and sometimes just to get away from everything.

It's funny how something so simple can have such a lasting impact on your life.

Where It All Started

I've been fortunate enough to experience a lot through fishing. From the rivers of Alaska to the waters of Florida's Emerald Coast, this passion has taken me places, introduced me to incredible people, and opened doors I never imagined possible.

But as I've gotten older, especially since becoming a father, my perspective has changed.

It's not just about what fishing has given me anymore.

It's about what I can give back.

That's where Lines of Service comes in.

Building Something Bigger Than Myself

When I started Lines of Service, I had a simple idea: give kids an opportunity to experience the same things that made such a difference in my life.

Not every child has someone to take them fishing. Not every family has access to the equipment, knowledge, or opportunities to get out on the water.

I wanted to help change that.

Through our fishing clinics, we're creating opportunities for children and families to learn together, spend time outdoors, and build memories that will hopefully stay with them for years.

And the beautiful thing is that the fishing is only part of it.

It's watching a child gain the confidence to cast a fishing rod for the first time.

It's seeing a parent light up when their child catches a fish.

It's watching kids put their phones down, become curious about the world around them, and realize they're capable of doing something they've never done before.

Those are the moments that matter to me.

A Day I'll Remember

On October 17, we hosted our Parents & Kids Halloween Fishing Clinic in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

We had 40 registrations and welcomed approximately 35 participants for a morning of fishing, learning, and spending time together.

With the help of our community partners, volunteers, and families, we were able to put fishing rods in children's hands and create an experience that went far beyond catching fish.

One of my favorite things was seeing children return from previous clinics.

They were more comfortable. More confident. Some already knew what to do before we even started.

That's when I realized we're not just putting on fishing events.

We're building something.

And hopefully, years from now, some of these kids will look back on these mornings the same way I look back on the time I spent fishing with my dad.

The Bigger Picture

I have a much bigger vision for Lines of Service.

I want to continue growing our children's fishing clinics, expanding our outdoor education opportunities, and eventually developing programs for veterans, families, and people who might not otherwise have access to these experiences.

I want to build something that lasts.

Something that continues creating opportunities long after any single event is over.

As a father, a veteran, and someone whose life has been shaped by the outdoors, this mission is personal to me.

I want my daughter to grow up understanding that success isn't just about what you accomplish for yourself. It's also about what you're willing to do for others.

And if I can use something I genuinely love to make a difference in somebody else's life, that's a pretty incredible way to spend my time.

More Than Just Fishing

I don't know exactly how big Lines of Service will become.

But I know why I started it.

Because somewhere out there is a kid who just needs an opportunity.

An opportunity to try something new. To build confidence. To spend time with family. To discover a passion that might stay with them for the rest of their life.

Fishing did that for me.

Now it's my turn to pass it on.

Stay solid to yourself and 100 in your heart.
